Genie Cable & Drum Replacement: The Tomball Owner’s Guide
Genie cable and drum replacement in Tomball typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we stock the common Genie configurations on our trucks for same-day completion. The cable winds around the drum, a grooved pulley that sits at the top of the door track, and when either fails the door usually hangs crooked or slams shut unevenly. Most Tomball homeowners notice the problem first thing in the morning: the door opens six inches, one side drops, and the opener strains or clicks off.
Which Genie Models This Applies To
Genie has used three main drum styles across its residential opener lines, and matching the wrong one throws off the cable wrap ratio, which is the number of cable coils the drum takes up per door inch. The current ReliaG, ChainLift, and SilentMax series ship with a 4-inch diameter high-lift drum, while older screw-drive units from the 1990s and early 2000s used a smaller 3-inch standard-lift drum. The part number is stamped on the drum hub, usually visible once you trace the cable to the top fixture.
We carry OEM Genie drums and cables, plus a quality aftermarket line that meets the same tensile spec at a lower price point. The aftermarket cables we use are 7×19 galvanized aircraft cable, rated for the same 1,200-pound working load as Genie factory cable. For drums, we prefer OEM on high-lift or vertical-lift doors because the groove pitch is machined tighter, and a mismatch here causes the cable to stack unevenly. On standard-lift doors under 8 feet, the aftermarket drum performs identically.
To identify your part: check the label on the opener rail for the model prefix (3024, 3055, 3064, etc.), then measure the drum diameter and count the grooves. If the cable is still intact, measure its diameter with calipers, 1/8-inch and 3/16-inch are the two Genie standards. Bring that to us, or text a photo. We will match it before we drive out.
Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

- The door hangs lower on one side. This happens when a cable frays and stretches unevenly, or when a drum crack lets the cable slip between grooves. The imbalance puts lateral stress on the rollers and track, which we often find before the customer notices the noise.
- A loud bang or pop from the garage, then normal operation resumes. That sound is usually a cable strand snapping inside the sheath. The remaining strands carry the load for a while, but the cable is now unpredictable. In Tomball’s humidity cycles, we see this more often on north-facing garage doors where condensation collects in the cable loops.
- The opener runs but the door barely moves, or moves in jerks. A seized drum bearing creates drag that the opener logic board reads as an obstruction. The opener reverses or stalls, and repeated attempts burn out the motor. We check the drum rotation by hand before we blame the opener.
- Visible rust, kinking, or bird-caging on the cable. Bird-caging is when the strands loosen and the cable bulges outward like a frayed rope. Once this starts, the cable will not seat cleanly in the drum groove and will chew itself apart within a few cycles.
- The cable has come completely off the drum. This usually means the drum set screws backed out, or the drum itself has worn grooves that no longer hold tension. A cable off the drum is not a re-wind job, the underlying cause has to be fixed or it will throw again.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Price Range in Tomball |
|---|---|
| Genie cable replacement (single) | $130-$190 |
| Genie cable replacement (pair, recommended) | $180-$250 |
| Genie drum replacement with cable | $180-$250 |
| Additional parts (worn pulleys, brackets) | $25-$75 each |
The range depends on door height (8-foot cables cost less than 10-foot), whether the drum is standard or high-lift, and what we find when we inspect the opposite side. We replace cables in pairs even when only one has failed, because the unstretched cable will not match the worn one and the door will track unevenly. Every replacement includes new winding sleeves, set screws, and lubrication of the drum bearings. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies, and the photo record shows you the old cable’s condition and the new part’s part number before we leave.
We are not affiliated with Genie, we are an independent service provider. We stock their parts because our customers in Tomball own their openers and need them to work.
DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe check a homeowner can make: with the door closed and the opener disconnected, pull the emergency release and lift the door manually. If one side rises faster, the cable or drum is suspect. Look, do not touch the cable itself. These cables are under several hundred pounds of tension even with the door down, and a sudden slip can cause serious injury. We do not recommend removing set screws, winding cables, or adjusting drum position without proper tools and training.
The part that failed tells you everything. We start there. Our technician photographs the drum and cable, shows you the wear pattern, and quotes a flat written price before any work starts, Clause 1 of The Haven Standard. If you have a written estimate from another company, bring it. Our Free Second Opinion means we will review their scope and pricing against what we actually find, no coupon needed. FAQs
Most Genie cables last 8-12 years in Tomball’s climate, though north-facing doors with poor ventilation can see rust-related failure in 5-7 years. The drum itself typically outlasts two cable cycles unless the bearing seizes or the grooves wear. Call (346) 703-6675 for an exact quote, estimates are free.
No. A frayed cable has lost structural integrity and cannot be spliced or trimmed to working length safely. Replacement is the only proper repair. Call (346) 703-6675 for an exact quote, estimates are free.
Most replacements take 45-90 minutes, including inspection of the opposite cable, track alignment check, and opener force adjustment. We carry the common Genie configurations on our trucks, so there is no parts run. Call (346) 703-6675 for an exact quote, estimates are free.
Yes. We stock 1/8-inch and 3/16-inch cables in standard lengths, plus 4-inch and 3-inch drums for the Genie lines we see most often in Tomball.
